Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy  Ski trip!

March 9 - 14, 2025  $1,275

"Cortina is one of the oldest ski resorts in Europe, in Italy’s north-eastern corner, with grand hotels dating from Victorian times, and is set among the stunning scenery of the Dolomites. Cortina’s 120km of pistes are spread around three separate and varied ski areas... The scenery that is the backdrop to all three is simply stunning, with red-tinged peaks (this is the effect of the famous Enrosadira, or ‘alpenglow’ phenomenon) rising vertically from the tops of runs.

"Ski resorts built where historic Alpine villages first existed are brimming with
 authentic Old-World charm"'

I'm sure I could have put together a European ski package for less.  But for me, the fame of Cortina d'Ampezzo and the charm of a ski resort that is also a beautiful Italian village made it worth a little more over a purpose-built resort.  I've read that even Italians who don't ski like to visit Cortina!  This is one of the few ski areas in northern Italy that is very Italian compared to the more Germanic ones.  Despite all this, and hosting the Winter Olympics in 2026, I was surprised to find that lodging and lift tickets at the peak of the season were less than U.S. ski resorts.  I suspect the added Olympics' fame will likely change Cortina for some time to come (think Barcelona), and make it more expensive in the future, so this is the year to go!

"Post-ski, enjoy a city-centre stroll, possibly spotting a celebrity, courtesy of Cortina’s luxurious hotels and star attraction status.

The town’s luxury extends to its cuisine. Sample local delicacies like polenta with venison sauce, regional cheeses, or dine at a Michelin-starred establishment. The fine dining pairs perfectly with the upscale skiing experience."

"A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dolomiti Superski is an interconnected ski domain that includes some 12 resorts and almost 300k acres of skiable terrain."

Mountain Stats:

  • Average Annual Snowfall – 300 inches
  • Skiable Terrain — 296,526 acres
  • Trails – 887
  • Chairlifts – 450

Cortina also has 95% snowmaking coverage, and despite it being on the World Cup circuit,
"There are runs for all standards but intermediates happy to try all three areas (and further afield) will get the most out of them."
