Early December is THE ideal time to sail in Thailand: the start of the dry season, but not yet too hot, with cooling breezes perfect for sailing! We'll sail from Phuket in a protected bay of the Andaman Sea (Phang Nga):
"The spectacularly scenic Phang Nga Bay is dotted with over 100 islands and is one of the best sailing grounds in the world. The bay is bounded by Phuket island to the west, Phang Nga and Krabi provinces to the north and east. Due to its sheltered nature conditions in Phang Nga are good all year round, with clear skies and gentle breezes from November to April.
Phang Nga Bay is famed for its limestone (karst) formations and cliffs that rise vertically up from the warm turquoise waters, the highest of which protrudes 350 m from the seabed. Many of these are fissured with caves which can be reached by sea kayak or dinghy. As well as many islands, the bay contains many inlets and channels waiting to be explored."
We'll sail from Phuket aboard a large catamaran in the protected Phang Nga Bay with over 100 islands, including Coral, the Phi Phis, and many film locations like "The Beach" and "James Bond island".
The Yacht
"The Elegant Cruising Palace"
"With so much deck space on the Saba 50, Fountaine Pajot was able to create three distinct and relatively separate social areas, while the interior accommodations would put some hotels to shame."
"The bow includes two lounges with accompanying settees and a cocktail table. It’s a very civilized space that still leaves room for lounging in the trampoline but adds a superyacht feel."
I splurged on the yacht. I thought it was important to have a catamaran in a place known for its beautiful waters, beaches and islands, where we'll mostly be at anchor rather than in marinas. A cat gives us greater access to those waters, and I booked a huge, 50' one to try to accommodate as many of the requests I've had for Thailand as possible.
